Why Is My AC Running But Not Cooling? 12 Causes and How to Fix Each One

Your AC is running — the fan is spinning, the compressor is humming — but the air coming out of the vents is warm or barely cool. Here are the 12 most common causes, ranked from easiest to fix yourself to most serious.

Why this happens more in Phoenix than anywhere else

Phoenix puts AC equipment under more stress than almost any other city in the United States. When outdoor temperatures exceed 110°F, your AC's condenser coil has to reject heat into extremely hot ambient air — a much harder job than rejecting heat into 90°F air. The efficiency of the refrigerant cycle drops, minor issues that wouldn't matter in Seattle become immediate performance problems in Scottsdale.

Before calling a technician, work through this list in order. The first six causes are things you can diagnose yourself. The remaining six require a pro. Going through the easy checks first saves you a service call fee if the fix turns out to be a dirty filter.

1. The thermostat is set to 'Fan Only' or 'On' instead of 'Cool' and 'Auto'

This is the most embarrassing fix and the first thing every tech checks, because it happens constantly. If your thermostat mode is set to 'Fan' or 'On' instead of 'Cool', the blower runs continuously but the compressor never engages. The air moves through the vents but it's not being cooled — it's just circulating at room temperature.

Fix: Set the thermostat to 'Cool' mode and the fan setting to 'Auto'. The 'Auto' setting means the fan only runs when the compressor is actively cooling, which is almost always what you want. 'On' runs the fan 24/7 regardless of cooling demand, which circulates uncooled air and can feel like it's 'blowing warm' even when the system is technically working.

Also check: Is the set temperature actually below the current room temperature? If you set it to 76°F and the room is 74°F, the compressor won't turn on — the thermostat thinks the target is already met.

2. Dead or weak thermostat batteries

Most programmable and smart thermostats run on AA or AAA batteries that need replacement every 1–2 years. When the batteries get low, the thermostat may still display correctly but lose the ability to send a proper signal to the air handler or compressor. The result is a system that appears to be on but doesn't actually trigger cooling.

Fix: Replace the batteries even if the display looks fine. This takes 60 seconds and costs nothing. If the system starts cooling immediately after, you've found the issue.

Smart thermostats like Nest and Ecobee draw a small amount of power from the C-wire (common wire) to stay charged. If yours relies entirely on batteries, consider having a C-wire adapter installed — it eliminates battery-related failures permanently.

3. Clogged or dirty air filter

A severely clogged filter restricts airflow through the evaporator coil. Without adequate airflow, the coil can't absorb heat from the air efficiently. In extreme cases it gets so cold it freezes — which then completely blocks airflow and results in warm air from the vents. Even before it freezes, a clogged filter can reduce cooling capacity by 15–25%.

In Phoenix, filters clog faster than in most cities because of dust, pollen, and the long cooling season. During summer, many homes need filter changes every 30–45 days. Homes with pets or near construction may need changes every 2–3 weeks.

Fix: Pull the filter out and hold it up to a light source. If you can't see light through it, replace it immediately. Use a MERV 8–11 filter. MERV 13+ filters have denser media that can restrict airflow in older systems not designed for high-resistance filtration — check your system's specifications before upgrading filter rating.

If the filter was severely clogged, give the evaporator coil 30–60 minutes to thaw before running the system again. Run the fan on 'On' mode (without cooling) to speed up the thaw.

4. Frozen evaporator coil

The evaporator coil lives inside your air handler, typically in a closet or attic. It's the indoor coil through which refrigerant flows and absorbs heat from your home's air. If airflow is restricted (dirty filter, closed vents, blocked return) or refrigerant is low, this coil can drop below freezing and ice over.

When the coil is frozen, air can't flow through it properly. The result is either dramatically reduced airflow, warm air from the vents, or water dripping or flooding as the ice melts — often visible as water around the air handler unit.

How to confirm: Turn the system off and set the fan to 'On'. Check the larger of the two copper refrigerant lines coming out of your outdoor unit — it should have insulation on it. If it's frozen solid or has ice visible, the coil is iced up.

Fix: Turn the cooling off and run the fan for 1–4 hours to thaw the coil. Then replace the air filter and check that all supply and return vents in the house are open and unobstructed. If the coil freezes again after running for an hour, the underlying cause is likely low refrigerant — which requires a technician.

5. Tripped circuit breaker

Your AC system typically runs on two separate circuits: one for the indoor air handler and one for the outdoor condenser unit. If the outdoor unit's breaker trips, the compressor stops running — but the indoor fan may continue running, blowing uncooled air through the house.

Fix: Go to your electrical panel and find the breaker labeled for the AC condenser or compressor (often 30A–60A, double-pole). If it's in the tripped position (middle position or flipped to 'Off'), reset it once by turning it fully off and then back on.

Important: If the breaker trips again immediately or within a few minutes, stop resetting it. A repeatedly tripping breaker means the circuit is overloaded or there's a fault in the system — most commonly a failed capacitor, failed compressor, or short circuit. Continuing to reset it can damage the compressor. At that point, call a technician.

6. Refrigerant leak (low refrigerant charge)

Refrigerant is the substance that actually carries heat from inside your home to outside. It flows in a closed loop and — if the system has no leaks — never gets 'used up.' A system low on refrigerant was either improperly charged at installation or has a leak somewhere in the refrigerant circuit.

Signs of low refrigerant: The air coming from vents is cool but not as cold as it used to be. The outdoor unit is running constantly but can't reach setpoint. Ice on the refrigerant lines or evaporator coil (paradoxically — the coil gets too cold when refrigerant pressure drops). A hissing or bubbling sound near the air handler or outdoor unit.

This is not a DIY fix. Refrigerant is regulated — only EPA Section 608 certified technicians can legally purchase and handle it. The tech needs to find and fix the leak first, then recharge the system to the manufacturer's specified pressure. Simply adding refrigerant to a leaking system is a temporary fix that won't last.

Common leak locations in Phoenix: brazed copper connections that expand and contract through extreme thermal cycling, the service valve cores, and the evaporator coil itself on older systems. Some coil leaks are not economically worth repairing on systems over 12 years old — replacement math often wins.

7. Failed run capacitor

The capacitor is a cylindrical component inside the outdoor condenser unit that stores electrical charge and provides the boost needed to start and run the compressor and condenser fan motor. Phoenix's extreme heat is brutal on capacitors — they're the single most common AC failure we see in summer.

When a capacitor fails, the compressor or fan motor (or both) can't start or run properly. You might hear a humming sound from the outdoor unit as the motor tries and fails to start. The condenser fan may not spin. The compressor may not engage at all.

This is a technician job — capacitors store charge even when the power is off and can cause serious injury if mishandled. The good news: capacitor replacement is one of the cheapest repairs in HVAC. The part typically costs $15–$50 and replacement takes about 20 minutes. Total repair bill usually runs $150–$300 including the service call.

If your system is more than 8 years old, ask the tech to check capacitor health (measured in microfarads) during any service visit. A capacitor reading below 6% of its rated capacitance is on its way out. Replacing it proactively at a tune-up is far cheaper than an emergency call when it fails at 2am in August.

8. Failed contactor

The contactor is a relay switch in the outdoor unit that the thermostat signals to engage — it physically connects power to the compressor and condenser fan motor when cooling is needed. Over time, the contactor's contact points pit and oxidize, especially in Phoenix's heat, where outdoor units run for thousands of hours per year.

A failing contactor may cause: the compressor to not turn on at all, intermittent cooling (system works sometimes but not others), or — more rarely — the compressor to run continuously even when the thermostat isn't calling for cooling (because the contactor is 'stuck' closed).

Contactor replacement is straightforward for a technician and typically runs $150–$250 for parts and labor. Like capacitors, proactive replacement during a tune-up on an older system is money well spent.

9. Dirty condenser coil

The condenser coil wraps around the outside of your outdoor unit — it's the set of fins you can see through the metal housing. Its job is to release the heat absorbed from your home into the outdoor air. When those fins are coated with dust, cottonwood seeds, dead grass, or pet hair, the coil can't shed heat effectively.

The result: the refrigerant exits the compressor too hot. The system's high-pressure safety switches may trip. Efficiency drops dramatically. In severe cases — common in Phoenix, where outdoor units are often near landscaping or block walls — a filthy condenser coil can reduce cooling capacity by 30% or more.

You can rinse the outside of the coil gently with a garden hose from the inside out (spray through the fins from inside the unit outward, never inward — this bends the fins backward). Don't use a pressure washer. For heavy buildup, coil cleaner applied by a technician is more effective. Annual cleaning during a spring tune-up prevents this entirely.

10. Duct leaks

Your ducts can leak in the attic, in walls, or at connections between sections. In a Phoenix home, the attic reaches 150–160°F in summer. If conditioned 55°F air is leaking out of your ducts into a 155°F attic before it reaches your living space, it's going to feel warm by the time it gets to the vent.

11. Undersized AC system

This is more common than people realize — many systems are replaced using 'same size as before' logic without recalculating the load, or original installs are done by square footage alone without accounting for Phoenix's extreme solar heat gain.

Signs of an undersized system: it runs continuously all day without ever reaching setpoint, the house stays 3–5°F above the thermostat setting on peak summer days, it can barely keep up at night when temperatures drop into the 90s. 12. Failing or failed compressor

The compressor is the heart of the AC system — it compresses the refrigerant, driving the refrigeration cycle. When a compressor starts to fail, you may notice: the system makes a loud grinding or rattling noise, the circuit breaker trips repeatedly, the outdoor unit runs but doesn't get warm on the side where hot air is normally exhausted (meaning refrigerant isn't being compressed), or the system draws dramatically more electricity than usual.

Compressor replacement is the most expensive repair in residential HVAC — typically $1,200–$2,500 for parts and labor, sometimes more for larger systems. On systems over 10–12 years old, compressor failure is almost always a trigger to evaluate full replacement rather than repair. A new compressor in a 14-year-old system that still uses R-410A refrigerant still has old coils, old capacitors, and an aging refrigerant infrastructure — you're putting a new engine in a car with 200,000 miles on everything else.

Ask your technician to check compressor amperage draw and compare it to nameplate specifications. High amperage draw is an early warning sign that the compressor is laboring before it fails completely.

Try yourself first: thermostat settings, thermostat batteries, air filter replacement, circuit breaker reset (once only), clearing debris from around the outdoor unit, rinsing the condenser coil fins with a gentle hose.

Always call a technician for: refrigerant issues (any refrigerant work requires EPA 608 certification), electrical component replacement (capacitors, contactors, motors), anything involving the compressor, duct testing and sealing, and any repair where you're not completely confident in what you're doing.
